control (experimental)
Experimental research designs require that all cases are randomly allocated to either the experimental group which receives the treatment being tested, or to a control group which receives no treatment or an ineffective (placebo) treatment, and hence provides baseline information on spontaneous developments against which the effects of the experimental treatment can be measured.
